P&L and margin by product

Access from: Profitability → P&L and Profitability → Margin by product

The P&L (profit and loss statement) brings together on one screen what you sell, what the sales channels charge you, what you spend on advertising and what the product costs you, and tells you how much is left: the contribution margin.

Epinium calculates it with the data from your Amazon Seller Central and Vendor Central accounts and with the product costs you add. If you have none of those accounts connected, the screen only shows a message asking you to connect one.

What it includes and what it does not

The P&L goes down to contribution margin: what each sale leaves after paying the channel, advertising and the product.

It does not include overheads (salaries, office, tools…) or taxes. Whatever is left after those expenses is outside what Epinium sees.

All amounts are shown in your profile currency. If you sell in several marketplaces, each amount is converted at the exchange rate of the day it happened.

Product cost, from the Business plan on

Product cost, contribution margin, margin on net sales and cost coverage are available from the Business plan on.

With a lower plan, the P&L goes down to advertising: you see sales, fees and advertising, but not what each product costs. Where you would normally see the margin, the cards and columns are instead called What remains and What remains on net sales, because without product cost that figure is not a real margin.

The waterfall lines

LineWhat it is
Gross salesWhat you sold in the period. Broken down into Seller sales and Vendor sales.
RefundsWhat you paid back to customers as refunds.
Net salesGross sales minus refunds. It is the base for the margin and the % of net sales of each line. The TACoS, as in the dashboards, is calculated over gross sales.
CommissionsWhat the sales channel charges for each sale.
LogisticsShipping of the units: FBA shipping (what Amazon charges) and Own shipping (the per-unit shipping cost you add).
StorageWhat Amazon charges for keeping your stock in its warehouses.
Other feesThe rest of the channel's charges that are not commission, logistics or storage.
Net proceedsNet sales minus the channel's fees and logistics, including your Own shipping.
AdvertisingAd spend, with one line per campaign type (Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, Sponsored Display).
Product costCost of goods sold: your per-unit cost for the units sold minus the returned ones.
Contribution marginWhat is left after all of the above.

The P&L screen

Filters

  • Period, compared with another period just like in the dashboard.
  • Connection and Country, to see a specific account or marketplace.
  • Aggregation: Monthly or Daily. It changes the columns of the table and of the trend chart.

The daily view covers up to 366 days. If you choose a longer period, we show the P&L by month and tell you with a message.

Indicators

At the top you see Net sales, Net proceeds, Contribution margin, Margin on net sales and TACoS. Each one shows how much it changed against the compared period. Margin on net sales is compared in percentage points (ppt).

Period waterfall

A bar chart that goes from gross sales to contribution margin, subtracting each block. Hovering a bar shows its amount and what share of net sales it is.

Trend

Net sales and costs for each month (or each day), with the contribution margin line and the Previous period margin line. Incomplete periods look lighter because their figures may still change.

P&L by month / P&L by day

The table with every line of the waterfall, one column per month (or per day), the Total and the % of net sales of each line.

A month that is ongoing, has just closed or is not fully covered by the period is marked (partial): sales channels publish some charges late and its figures may still change.

Advertising by sales channel

A table that crosses where you sell with where you advertise. Each row is a sales connection and the columns are the spend on each advertising platform, the Net proceeds and the Margin on net sales of that connection, which already deducts its advertising. The Total row adds them all up.

Messages you may see

MessageWhy it appears
Incomplete product costSome sales in the period have no product cost. Without it, the margin shows higher than it really is. The message tells you what share of gross sales has a cost and has the Add costs button.
Last days missingSales channels publish their data a few days late. The message tells you up to which day there is data. If sales and fees reach one day and advertising another, it gives you both dates.
Storage on a single dayIn the daily view: Amazon charges storage once a month, so the whole charge falls on a single day. It does not happen by month.
RecalculatingYou have just added or changed costs and the P&L is being recalculated. It shows a progress bar, the figures stay frozen and the costs of that account are locked until it finishes. Then the amounts update.
No dataThere are no sales or fees for the chosen period and connections.
Plan without product costYour plan does not include product cost: the P&L goes down to advertising. The message has the Unlock with Business button.

How to complete product cost

Available from the Business plan on. The margin is only real when every sale has a product cost. You can add it in two ways:

  1. From the coverage message of the P&L or of Margin by product, with the Add costs button, which opens the cost import from a file.
  2. Product by product, in the Cost tab of its detail.

Both ways only appear if you can edit the catalog and your plan includes product cost.

All the details in Product costs.

Margin by product

In Profitability → Margin by product you have the same figures, but one row per product and marketplace: sales, refunds, net sales, each fee, advertising, product cost, contribution margin and Margin on net sales, with their change against the compared period.

The Cost coverage column tells you what share of that product's sales has a cost. That way you quickly find the products that are missing one.

Without product cost in your plan, the Product cost and Cost coverage columns show faded with a crown: they are not real figures, they show that column is for the Business plan and above.

The No product assigned row groups the amounts that come without a product, mostly advertising spend that is not tied to any product.

The detail button of each row opens the product detail.

Margin in the product detail

In the detail of a Seller or Vendor product, the Performance tab starts with its margin: the same indicators, the waterfall and the table by month, with the detail of each line. If the product is missing a cost and you can edit the catalog, the message has a button that takes you to its Cost tab.

If the product has not sold in the chosen period, a message tells you so.

The Cost tab, where you add the product's cost one by one, requires the Business plan: on lower plans it shows locked with a crown, and trying to open it takes you to the plans screen.

Saved views

Both screens work with views, like the rest of Epinium. Epinium gives you a starting view in each one (Monthly P&L and All products). To save your filters (a connection, the daily aggregation…) use Duplicate View and give the copy a name.
